Petting Zoo and Farm Animals

PDF Print Email

zoe-watusi-cow.jpg The Petting Zoo at Jane's Saddlebag is unlike most petting zoos you have or will ever visit. In order to understand why we are so unique, we'd like to introduce you to all our farm friendly animals.

The Horses

First and foremost, there's our favorite animal, Tokey the American Paint Horse. She is a real horse and is also the main character of the children's book, "The Story of Big Bone" Lick by Nancy Jordan Blackmore. Because of this, Tokey has been awarded the title of Ambassador of Goodwill by the Kentucky Legislature and has visited the Kentucky Governor when she was on a book tour in Frankfort.

horse.jpgSan Louis Bask is an Arabian Gelding in his golden years of life, along with Satchel who is part Paint and part Percheron (where she gets her enormous size).

Rounding out the horses is TT (Tokey Two). TT was born on the site of the Battle of Grassy Run in Ohio. Both Tokey and TT have one brown eye and one blue eye which is common for horses with color.

Watusi Cow (native to Africa)

Zoe (pronouced ZOH-EE) is a female Watusi cow with an enormous set of horns. That's why many visitors believe she is a bull! A little known fact is that animals who have horns can be both both male or female. Since horns grow from birth until death, Zoe's horns get larger every year. Zoe makes friends very easily when you feed her bread. She loves it! Just when you think she couldn't eat another bite, she still has room for more.

goat.jpg The Goats, Llamas, Miniature Donkey, and Livestock Guardian Dog

Our goats are a mix of Boer Goats from South Africa and Kiko Goats which is a hearty breed from New Zealand.  They graze alongside Michelle and Obama Llama, Xena the Warrior Princess (our livestock guardian dog who is part Great Pyrenees and Anatolian Shepherd), and Dominick the miniature donkey. All are gentle creatures that love when friendly visitors come to see them. Rather than being imprisoned in a cage, we prefer to keep them in their natural surroundings so our visitors really get a sense of their personalities.

Spring time is when the nanny goats begin to have their kids, and visitors to the Petting Zoo get to watch the babies run and play and even make friends with them. Sometimes there's the opportunity to experience a live birth!

Admission to Petting Zoo: $5.00
