Family Friendly Grounds

PDF Print Email

family.jpgThe best way to describe Jane's Saddlebag is like going to your grandparent's farm. One of the first things you do at your Grandma's is eating good home cooking. Nancy is the cook and fixes the best home cooking in the county. Folks talk about the grilled Woolly Mammoth Burgers or Frozen Ice Age Pies. When regular visitors stop by, they simply ask Nancy "What should I eat today?"

Once the garden starts producing there's plenty of fresh vegetables each day that we open our doors. Besides the usual things you would expect at Grandma's farm you will get the healthy version as well, with hearty soups, scrumptious chicken salad, fresh fruit and vegetables seasoned with herbs picked right outside the kitchen door. (See Homemade Food Menu )

Once you have satisfied your hunger it is time to explore the grounds. Today, the family farm is few and far between which makes the trip to Jane's so delightful. Families spend hours touring the facilities and learning about the rich history Boone County has to offer.

First you learn about the "Saddlebag" house once popular as tenant houses on larger farms in Kentucky. Saddlebag houses were built to have two front doors with one house on one side and one house on the other sharing a center fireplace. This structure was the forerunner of a modern day duplex.

smokehouse-grounds.jpg A trip to the Historic Smokehouse gives the visitors a glimpse of what life was like on a farm in Kentucky back in the day when folks didn't have refrigeration. To keep their food from spoiling they would smoke their meat and then store it for later use.

Our outdoor amphitheater is focused around the life-size replica of a 1700 Flatboat . Tour the Spirit of Boone County and learn about the history of the flatboat, historic Big Bone Creek and the mighty Ohio River.

No trip to the farm is complete without a visit to the friendly barn-yard animals. At Jane's Saddlebag Farm no one gets more visitors than Tokey the American Paint horse who is the main character of the Children's book The Story of Big Bone Lick. As an Ambassador of Goodwill for Kentucky, Tokey has delighted and bonded with many young readers who journey into the past with him. Interacting with the horses, our Watusi cow, miniature donkey, Michele and Obama Llama, the herd of goats, Squeaker the cat, a pond full of fish and a livestock guardian dog named Xena, rounds out every visit.

Geology: the study of the Earth which includes composition and material, structure, processes, and history.
Paleontology: the study of life forms existing in prehistoric times as represented by the fossils of plants, animals, and other organisms.
Archaeology: the systematic study of past human life and culture by the recovery and examination of remaining material evidence, such as graves, buildings, tools, and pottery.

Families tour the themed outbuildings (Geology, Paleontology and Archaeology) which represent the extensive study of Big Bone Lick.

Then of course after you explore you can stop in the antique barn or Jane's Saddlebag for a unique shopping experience. Nancy believes in reincarnating many items whether it is an antique or early attic. There are plenty of mementos to purchase so you can always remember your visit.
