School Group Day Tour of Kentucky History

PDF Print Email

Jane's Saddlebag, a Heritage Tourism Destination, is teeming with engaging Kentucky History. Many have visited and studied the fossils from this World Heritage Site that is the birthplace of American Paleontology. Our School Day Tour is a journey through time that makes learning history fun!

Students will...

  • Explore our authentic life-size replica of a circa 1700 Flatboat.
  • Obtain information about the Mary Ingles Story, Thomas Jefferson, Lewis and Clark, Benjamin Franklin, and our Big Bone Lick history through our themed outbuildings
  • Learn about Indians that lived in the region and our native culture.
  • Go through our 100 year old Mortise and Tenon barn, original smokehouse, a restored "Saddlebag House."
  • Visit the friendly animals in our Petting zoo featuring Tokey the American Paint Horse, Kentucky Ambassador of Goodwill, from the children's book The Story of Big Bone Lick by Nancy Jordan Blackmore. (When students purchase their very own copy, Nancy will personally sign it for them.) Other farm animals include several horses, a donkey, Watusi cow, goats, a pig, llamas, fish, and a livestock guardian Dog.
  • Home cooked specialty foods are featured at Jane's Saddlebag restaurant such as grilled Woolly Mammoth Burgers and Frozen Ice Age Pies. Students may also bring their lunch and have a picnic under the shelter.

And because this is a day they'll always want to remember, students can visit our gift shop which features an array of unique keepsakes.

Nearby:

Big Bone Lick State Park, one of America's most significant historic and scientific sites, is only 2.5 miles away. For thousands of years, the salt springs at Big Bone Lick attracted ice age mega beasts like the mammoth, mastodon, giant sloth, and primitive people. The "Place of Big Bones" is a Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Site and includes a gift shop, outdoor museum, Discovery Trail, small herd of Buffalo, camping, fishing and hiking.
