Willie the Woolly Mammoth, the main character in The Story of Big Bone Lick, is our mascot because he embodies a kind spirit and warm heart. He, of course, is a mammoth and an extinct part of the elephant family.
Elephants are mammals like us and they live in a matriarchal society meaning they are governed by a female. The male elephants are pushed out of the herd to live a solitary life at about the age of 14. The oldest female will lead the herd until her death which is sometimes as old as 72 years.
Nancy Jordan Blackmore, author and co-owner of Jane's Saddlebag, loves elephants! Therefore she thoroughly enjoyed learning and writing this fictional tale built on solid facts as the scientific world sees them today. Besides her beloved horse, Tokey, if ever she felt like another animal were here in spirit at Jane's Saddlebag, it would definitely be Willie the Woolly Mammoth.
